Volume 10 - CUPERTINO
81 Drum & Percussion Samples
Our tenth limited-edition sound pack CUPERTINO is a page out of technology’s past and future files, featuring 81 samples based on the 1984 Apple IIC computer’s user experience (UX).
The Apple IIC was a breakthrough computing device that brought all the virtues of owning a computer to the masses with it’s appliance-like approach. As a result of its intended purpose and the time period, it was a machine overflowing with charming-yet-simple visible/audible feedback. For CUPERTINO, Pyro Audio secured a near-mint Apple IIC from the founder of MasterPiece Chess—complete with auxiliary disk drives, application disks, an Apple printer, and monitor.
CUPERTINO captures the essence of the Apple IIC user experience and releases it into a modern set of beat production samples that sound both nostalgic and futuristic at the same time. From the “clack” of the IIC’s iconic mechanical keyboard to the sprite-like “bleeps” from apps and games, CUPERTINO is a refreshing collection of late-night child-like hardware exploration.
The sound pack was captured in 24-bit/96kHz using two exquisite microphones; the Sennheiser MKH800 and Neumann KU100 binaural dummy-head. The former as a true-to-life spot mic in the Pyro Audio isolation booth, and the latter as a medium for capturing the 1-bit toggling of the IIC’s sound card through closed-back headphones. The binaural setup perfectly replicates the 1st person user experience (the IIC featured no speakers—only a 3.5mm audio jack) during boot-up sequences and applications.
Other notable sonic permutations include the mechanics of the ImageWriter II dot-matrix printer, on/off switches, floppy disk retrieval, and system power cycles. CUPERTINO also features a unique twist on feedback tones, with a 12-note kit that provides instant inspiration to compliment the treasure trove of nuanced transient samples.
